Summary
Several epidemiological studies currently investigate whether snoring, a breathing noise during sleep, is an independent morbidity and mortality factor. The association with sleep apnea causes methodological problems. Snoring in this context is not only a psychosocial problem. Cardiovascular and cerebral risks must also be taken into consideration.
As of today, there is no treatment, which has few side effects, and is economical and effective at the same time. For this reason, we investigated, in this study, in 10 snoring subjects, the immediate effect on snoring after a single use of the stimulation device "Silent One".
In subjects with severe snoring and longer snoring periods, a definite reduction of the snoring periods could be determined. In subjects with less pronounced snoring problems, obvious changes in the snoring pattern were not observed.
In patients with sleep apnea, the unspecific electro stimulation of the muscles beneath the lower jaw and adjacent to the hyoid bone caused a significant reduction of apnea episodes. (Wilcoxon p=0.01).
